Subj: Re: ** Internet Pirate SWL list ** 16 Nov 1990 **
Interesting note.....there was an item a few weeks back about a pirate
with a transmitter just across the border from Texas in Mexico. The
call given was XERK, and there was a phone number listed for calling
in requests to the station.
I did a check with the telephone operator, asking "name/place" based
upon the area code and prefix of the phone number. The AT&T operator
said it was in Donna, Texas.
Just the other day I received a copy of the W5YI Report. It said that
George Hopp Jr of Donna, Texas was fined $1000 by the FCC for unlicensed
operation of XERK on 7435 KHz. So apparently the station was NOT in
Mexico, and in fact the phone number may have gone right to Hopp's house,
instead of reaching him via a more roundabout route.

Subj: QSLs received in Sweden
I have been reading this mailing list a rather long time.
I found the stuff here very interesting, especially the stuff
from Jean Burnell.
Personally, I'm too lazy to stay up during the night hours here to hear
pirates. At least during the winter period. Summer time is another
thing.....
I start with a list of QSLs received by Swedish DXers taken from
the October bulletin of the Swedish DX Federation.
R. Orang Utan - 6206. One week.
British Radio Int. - 6232. 12 w.
R. Meteor (Fin) - 6276. 4 w.
Radio Freedom Int. - 6280. 6 w.
R. Northlight - 6280. 7 w.
R. Confusion Int. - 6299. 6 w.
R. Stella Int. - 6320. 3 w.
FRSH - 7310. 7 w.
R. Benelux - 7430. 4 w.
PFBS - 15050. 6 w.
Quality R. - 15054. 14 w.
Unfortunately, they have never shown any addresses.
So, I want to send thanks to Jean for his info!
I will also include information from my friend's loggings in
the future.
Good DX!
Kent
PS We have both JRC NRD525s

Subj: Late pirate logging
On 1 Nov 90 UTC (Halloween), I listened for pirates. All I heard was some
real weak stuff until 0136 UTC, when there was a s9 carrier and then some
rock and rap music on 7417. Again nothing until 0300 when Radio Anarchy came
on 7417, undoubtedly the same station as at 0136, giving its location as the
high Sierras and QSL to the Blue Ridge mail drop.
There was something to the effect of, "It's about time there were audible
pirate stations on the West Coast," and a discussion of the recently rebuilt
transmitter and how they knew they were off frequency but that's the only
crystal they had. This was followed by about a half hour of VERY alternative
rock music, mostly on religious and social themes.
Signal was AM and pretty good (SINPO 43334).

[ Speaking Of R. Anarchy.... I got a postcard from the op asking for
[ folks to tune 9990 in the 0200-0700z time frame. Xmtr is homebrew
[ 4 watter, and reports have ranged from Idaho to California. The
[ op targets the west coast, and programs Harcore/industrial music.
[ They also request logs be sent to Pirate Pages and to the ACE.
[
[ What follows was sent in by a "charter subscriber" (where ya been
[ Nick!!) and was published in April of this year. Good info on Pirate
[ SWLing... any others?

Subj: QUestions for the list....
Let me take up the first part of Will Martin's question, since someone else
posted the second (interference on 7415)...
There are no hard and fast rules on where/when to find pirates. Last year
I heard pirates mostly at 0300-0700 UTC...weekends were active, but for
awhile it seemed like *every night* was a big night (Radio Clandestine
was really active then, along with KRUD). Now, I seem to get them Friday
through Monday from 2000-2300. Again, even this isn't a sure thing.
An interesting time is major holidays (4th of July, Memorial Day, New
Years' Eve, and Halloween (I heard Crystal Ship Radio one Halloween about
5 years ago or so). I fully expected April 1st to be active, and
according to George Zeller (relayed via the ANARC net) it was busy in
his area (Cleveland, I believe), but it was dead here in New York State.
As to where to listen, 7415 kHz is still (as far as I can tell) predominant,
though many others are being reported (e.g. 1620, 6240, 7395, 7448, 15043
Khz, et. al.).
Because of the nature of pirate radio, rarely will tests be preannounced;
one announcement came in over the ANARC net, but I didn't hear the test,
though I tried.
The only tips I can offer are (1) patience...I usually monitor 7415 20 hours
or more a week, late afternoon into the night (2) pay particular attention
to your antenna/receiver...frankly, these pirates aren't known for having
wonderful signals (Radio Clandestine, however, had a beautiful signal...
better than some SW broadcasters I've heard). In my case, I'm using a
Yaese FT-747GX amateur radio tranceiver/gen. coverage receiver and a
104' long dipole up 30' in the air and fed with RG-8M coax. However,
I have heard pirates with a Sangean and a wire to a window screen. Really,
I'd spend time on the antenna...you can have a $4000 receiver with a whip
antenna and a $200 receiver with a good dipole (or better antenna)...in
almost all cases, the $200 receiver will catch the signal better.
Many of the techniques used for DXing hams or SW broadcasters really do
apply to pirates, except they're more unpredictable. Try listening
on a Saturday afternoon on 7415 from about 1800-0000 UTC and see if anything
pops up. That might be your best bet.
Oh, another good thing to do is to listen to the ANARC net (7240 Khz LSB
starting at 10 AM EDT...can usually be heard on the East Coast easily)...
you can find up-to-date info there (if you can't hear it, don't worry...
I copy down all the pirate loggings and submit them immediately to this
list). It's been said pirates occasionally pop up on 7415 right after the
net, but I haven't heard them up there.
Make sure to keep a tape recorder handy...it's some of the funniest radio
this side of Howard Stern on WXRK-FM New York. :-)
73 & good listening,
Nick
[-------------------------------
[ I heard the following stations since last issue:
[ WGAR - 11-27 7415U 0127-0201* Krishna readings. Ann Gary ,
[ Indiana and 100W to a dipole.
[ WDLN - 11-28 7415U 0115-0150* 7 Dylan songs. Only by b'casting
[ Bob D in USB, can his voice
[ become any more strange.
[ No addresses were copied for either of the above. Hints?
[
[ That's it till next time. As always post early and often! As the
[ Holidays approach, broadcasts should increase. Late news copied off
[ of the ANARC BBS indicates that Hope R. is testing again. Listen
[ in the 41m band for them, as they have had some of the best
[ produced broadcasts of late.
[ That's it for this issue. As always, post early and often. 73&DX.
